Description

Heights:

Clanker has no fear whatsoever – she quite likes the view, and can be uncomfortable blasé around dangerous drops.

Cobalt on the other hand, is outright acrophobic. Whilst he tends to forget just how bad his fear is when his feet are on solid ground, he’s prone to freezing up entirely when faced with heights, digging his claws deep into the nearest solid object (or person) and refusing to move for fear of plummeting to his doom. Once he freezes up, he can be very hard to dislodge from whatever he’s attached himself to. His fear is made much, much worse if he’s high enough up to feel the wind blowing on his face, or if there’s nothing sturdy for him to hold onto.

Fire:

Cobalt isn’t particularly afraid of fire, and in fact finds the shifting, liquid flames slightly hypnotic, but he knows it’s potentially dangerous, and needs to be treated with respect.

Clanker thinks fire is amazing, and bright, and really pretty, and will chuck stuff onto it to see what will burn the best.

Water:

Cobalt has a healthy respect for water. He knows that he’s too densely studded with rocks to swim, and is cautious around large bodies of water, but he quite enjoys splashing about in safe, shallow amounts. He’ll quite happily read in the bathtub until one of his housemates needs the bathroom and chases him out.

Clanker’s fear of water rivals Cobalt’s fear of heights. She’s outright terrified of water, and has an irrational fear that she’ll sink in water that’s only centimetres deep. She’s convinced that water has the almost supernatural ability to drag Pokemon down, and that if she steps into a puddle, she’ll be pulled under and drowned. Her real fear is of being submerged and suffocated – she’s not particularly afraid of being splashed with water, or getting rained on (although being a Rock-type, neither of those things do her much good), but being forced to walk through a shallow puddle will make her verge on hysterical.

Small Spaces:

Cobalt loves small spaces. In the wild, his main defence against predators would be living in narrow tunnels where larger, more dangerous Pokemon couldn’t follow, so being enclosed in a small dark space is instinctively comforting for him, and makes him feel safe. If he’s feeling under the weather, or exceptionally stressed, he’s prone to dragging all the covers off his bed, and making himself a den under the bedframe to hide in.

Clanker isn’t actively comforted by enclosed spaces, but she’s not particularly frightened of them, either. She spent most of her childhood inside a cave, and explored most of the narrow nooks and crannies in it, so she’s used to being closed in by rock on all sides.

Open Spaces:

Clanker is entirely comfortable with wide open spaces, and loves exploring the great outdoors – she used to spend a lot of time “helping” her father to patrol the outer bounds of their territory.

Cobalt’s not exactly frightened of open spaces, but extremely flat, open areas do make him feel unnervingly exposed. Looking directly up into a clear blue sky can give him vertigo, and the uncomfortable, irrational feeling that he might just slip off the face of the planet and fall up
forever.

Being Alone:

Cobalt lived on his own for years, and in the wild, his species would naturally be virtually solitary. Now that he’s tasted the joys of having friends, he’d be horrified to lose them and go back to his old solitary life forever, but has no problem with being alone on a short-term basis. In fact, he’d probably appreciate having more me-time to relax and get some reading done.

Clanker, on the other hand, is a small child separated from her parents. Whilst she doesn’t know her parents are never coming back, and holds out hope that they could be coming to get her any day now, she still misses them desperately. Her parents always doted on her, and were there for her whenever she needed them, so she’s never had to be alone before. As such, she’s quickly gets lonely and frightened when left alone, and can be quite clingy with her friends. She has the bad habit of waking up alone in the middle of the night, and either crawling into Cobalt’s bed, or snuggling up with Popcorn.

Blood:

Cobalt is fine with other people’s blood, but the sight of his own (or someone he really cares about's) can make him go a little weak in the knees, depending on how much there is, and how it got outside of him in the first place.

Clanker is a little more uneasy about blood – her skin is so thick and rocky, she’s not used to the minor cuts and scrapes most children get, so the sight of blood is more of a shock to her. Seeing one of her friends get a cut is quite frightening for her – it takes a lot of damage to make an Aron bleed, so she’s liable to panic and think that they’re hurt far worse than they actually are.

Death:

Clanker is obviously scared of dying, particularly in a painful or frightening manner, but she’s too young and immature to really, truly grasp the implications of her own mortality yet. She doesn’t have any firm beliefs on what will happen to her after she shuffles off the mortal coil, mainly because she hasn’t thought about her own death much, but she’s reasonably sure everything will turn out alright in the end.

Cobalt, on the other hand, has had a lot more time to sit alone in the dark and think about his own eventual demise, and it scares him (figuratively) to death. He’s come to the conclusion that he doesn’t really believe in anything after death, and is pretty horrified by the concept of oblivion, and the thought that he’ll eventually just…end. He tries not to think about it too much if he wants to sleep at night.

Dirt:

Neither Clanker nor Cobalt care too much about getting dirty – both of them grew up in muddy, silty caves, and both of them are quite capable of eating soil for lunch, in a pinch. Given that they have stomachs that can digest steel and diamonds, there’s not really a microbe alive that could give them food-poisoning, so neither of them really have to worry about falling ill from a lack of hygiene. Cobalt cares slightly more about being clean than Clanker does: Cobalt will at least try to make sure he doesn’t walk around reeking of sweat and caked in filth, whereas Clanker is a disgusting little kid that has to be forcibly scrubbed once a week.

Needles:

Cobalt would really rather not get a needle jabbed into his skin, but he’ll try to mask his nerves to save face, and set a good example for Clanker. He’ll endure medical treatment if he has to, and will only whimper slightly when the needle goes in, but you won’t see him lining up to donate blood or get his ears pierced any time soon.

Clanker, on the other hand, hates needles – her skin is far too thick to pierce, so if she needs an injection, it has to be delivered through the small, sensitive chinks in her armour. Not only does being jabbed in these places hurt more, but being so heavily armoured, she’s also not really used to the pain.

Clowns:

Clanker genuinely loves clowns, and finds them endearing and funny.

Clowns make Cobalt slightly uneasy – those big feet and squeaky red noses just ain’t natural.

Storms:

The first time Cobalt heard thunder, he nearly wet himself, and ran around in a blind panic convinced that the sky was caving in on his head. Now he actually knows what a storm is, and that the sky isn’t going to fall in on him, he actually quite likes watching them, as long it’s from the safety of somewhere warm, dry and sheltered.

Clanker doesn’t mind storms either - her parents always told her that the loud crashes of thunder and the flashes of lightning were caused by two gigantic Aggron brothers up in the sky, fighting back and forth over territory, and crashing into each other so hard that their armour sparked and lit up the sky. Whenever a storm hits, she likes to peek up at the clouds, and see if she can spot them fighting up there.

Failure:

Cobalt tends to have an over-inflated sense of his own brilliance, so doesn’t really worry too much about failure until everything has fallen down around his ears.

Clanker is far less confident in herself, far more capable of seeing what could go wrong in a given situation, and far more likely to let her imagination run away with her regarding consequences.

Public Speaking:

Neither Clanker nor Cobalt are particularly bothered by public speaking. Cobalt’s too arrogant confident to think anything could go wrong, and Clanker’s too socially oblivious to really care about saying the wrong thing. Unfortunately, neither of them are in much demand to give speeches.

Rejection:

Cobalt’s attitude to rejection is somewhere along the lines of “if you can’t see how amazing I am, then why would I want to be around someone with such awful taste”? He’s fairly deluded confident in himself, and confident that other people will appreciate his talents. In the unlikely event that they don’t…well, that’s their problem.

Clanker, on the other hand, is a lot less confident in herself. Again, she’s a small child separated from her parents, and whilst she mostly trusts Popcorn and Cobalt, she can’t quite shake the fear that perhaps one day they’ll get bored with her, and she’ll be left all alone again…or even worse, that one day she’ll do something so bad that she’ll make them go away.

The Dark:

Both Clanker and Cobalt were raised in deep, lightless caves, and are completely at home in the dark. Clanker has excellent night-vision, and a superb sense of direction that lets her navigate in pitch-darkness – her nose is filled with magnetic crystals, so she always knows which way is North, and is capable of sensing deposits of iron ore. Cobalt is capable of seeing even in pitch-darkness – he’s not sure whether his vison is outright supernatural, or whether he’s picking up some other wavelengths, but he’s clearly not limited to seeing the usual visual spectrum.

Ghosts:

Despite being best friends with one, Clanker is scared of ghosts.  Despite his attempts to convince her otherwise, she’s sure that Cobalt is an anomalous “friendly ghost”, and that all other ghosts are terrifying, soul-eating monsters, and that there might be hundreds of them hiding under her bed.

Cobalt isn’t afraid of ghosts, for fairly obvious reasons. He’s quick to reassure Clanker that he’s the scariest, spookiest ghost of all, and that if any other ghosts want to hide in her wardrobe, they’ll have to deal with him first. He hopes he never has to make good on this promise.

The Number Thirteen:

Neither Clanker nor Cobalt grew up with any superstitions surrounding the number 13, so neither of them finds it scary or ominous in any way.

Strangers:

Cobalt has no particular fear of strangers. He won’t necessarily trust a complete stranger immediately, but he’ll generally be friendly and helpful unless said stranger is obviously threatening or untrustworthy, or introduces themselves via punch to the face.

Clanker hasn’t met all that many other kinds of Pokemon, and can be startled by strangers with unusual features she hasn’t encountered yet, but generally reacts to meeting new people with fascination – a fascination that may lead to innocent but hurtfully personal questions if Cobalt doesn’t interrupt her in time.

Spiders:

Neither Clanker or Cobalt have any fear of spiders…yet.

Insects, Snakes, Sharks, Fish, Horses, Dogs, Cats, Birds & Mice:

Neither Clanker nor Cobalt have any particular fears or prejudices against the various types of Pokemon inhabiting Andaluust.

Bats:

Clanker has no fear of bat-like Pokemon whatsoever.

Cobalt once woke up to find a Zubat latched onto his foot and slurping blood from his toes, so is slightly more wary.

Oneself:

Clanker is nowhere near mature or introspective enough to have any fear of herself – her perspective is essentially “I’m me. Why would I be afraid of me? I’m not going to do anything bad to myself”.

Cobalt is also fairly comfortable with himself, and has a nigh-pathological ability to justify away any wrongdoing on his part. He’s more likely to wallow in self-pity and internally blame others than he is to really stop and consider his actions…but on extremely rare occasions, he’ll take himself aback with his own actions, and worry a little about what that says about him.

Bright Lights:

Cobalt is instinctively programmed to feel safe in the dark, and exposed in the light. He’s spent enough time above ground to acclimatise to daylight and feel comfortable in the sun, but unexpectedly shining a bright light at him will still make him hiss and scramble for the nearest dark corner.

Santa:

Clanker’s greed and fear are in perfect balance here. On one hand, Santa brings presents, which is awesome. On the other hand, he’s an old guy who watches her sleep and judges whether she’s been good or bad all year, which is terrifying. How does he know? Can he read her thoughts? Can he hear what she’s thinking right now?

Creepy Dolls:

Cobalt considers himself a rational, reasonable Pokemon. That said, there are some dolls that are undoubtably pure evil, and will do unspeakable things to him if he dares turn his back on them.
